Learning Zbrush - Gigantic

Fig.1 - 3D Model

I participated in one of Carlo Bautista's workshops where I had to create a model from 'Gigantic.' If following my process, it is comprehensible that Zbrush is not one of my strongest suits. Following the tutorial; I was able to learn how to properly sculpt a character, use tools, and understand the fundamental of the software.

Fig.2 - Character Blocking

I struggled with character blocking but I was able to overcome it after following the workshop. I realised you don't have to be afraid to add the necessary shapes needed to create a character. Following the tutorial I used a sphere and moulded it with the move tool, after that, I duplicated the sphere and repeated the same technique to create the character layout. Going through the workshop was hard for me as a beginner as it was sped up and did not give information on what tools or shortcut was used step by step in the process of creating the model. Which was a little frustrating as I had to do some research on how to achieve certain things.   Overall I was able to learn more by researching which widened my knowledge of Zbrush.

Fig.3 - Rough Blocking

As shown in Figure 3, I started getting used to rough blocking and using the brushes. I realised using a mouse is probably not an ideal idea although it could still work. Using Zbrush does not feel neutral to me yet as the brushes are hard to control, mostly when trying to position the model. Sculpting the chest was interesting, as I figured Zbrush is like working with clay, and not having the sensitivity of it all makes it even harder to sculpt. Using the mouse I would use the sensitivity bar to my predilection. What I would do differently is use a tablet, as that might give me more control with the brushes. In addition, Learn what each brush does.

In conclusion, the workshop helped me understand the basics of Zbrush in Character blocking, even though I am not a pro I was able to merge and mould the shapes easily than I did on my first try. Part 2 of this workshop I will use my tablet and see the difference.
